Deciphering this narrative-imbedded code requires finding the exact historical context and conversation, and verifying it with a timeline of events. This is what we have endeavored to do. Part of this account of covert events and plans was hidden by Tolkien within certain of his writings. Tolkien was a Signals Officer in WWI, and he developed code that he used privately while in the military. He was informed that he had been set aside as a code breaker before WWII, and was asked to serve in the Foreign Office's cryptographic department, in the event of a national emergency. He created several of his own languages. Tolkien was also part of what we call, 'the covert world'.
